Last year my husband and I attended a wedding in Florida and during the approximate two hours we spent on the beach I came away with the burn of a lifetime that not only landed me in the ER, but also with golf ball sized blisters covering my entire right arm. It was atrocious and I did irreparable damage to my skin. (In my defense, I was on an antibiotic for the gallbladder issues I was having and said antibiotic didn’t come with a sun warning. I was wearing sunscreen at the time but it didn’t really matter.)
I mentioned last week that my husband and I are heading off to the Caribbean for another wedding next week, and this time I’m not taking any chances. I’m not on any antibiotics (knock on wood), and I’ve packed the arsenal of sun products you see above.
Here are the sun products me and my husband will be using in the Caribbean, as well as for the rest of the summer:
Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen for Body SPF 50($25): I discovered this sunscreen after last year’s debacle and used it all of last summer, including at my wedding. This product is super lightweight, has no scent, and it isn’t greasy. This is one of those products I know I will keep buying year after year.
Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ ($38): I was worried about getting facial sunscreen because I have extremely sensitive skin, but after nearly a year of wearing this product regularly I can say that it works well and it doesn’t cause my skin to breakout. It has a slight scent, though it is by no means overpowering. It goes on very light, and I think it adds an extra level of protection without needing to slather on a heavier sunscreen. As a bonus, this product helps to fight up to 90% of skin aging, which means it’s great for everyday use.
Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 ($14.99): This is my all-time favorite moisturizer, and its UV protection is brilliant. As long as I have used this product I have never once had a sunburn on my face.
Neutrogena Sport Face Sunblock with SPF 70+ ($9.99): I picked this up for my husband because I didn’t think he wanted to apply both of my products, and this will be something that he can easily reapply throughout the day. Plus, the SPF 70 protection is fantastic! (I’m not using this product because the reviews are so-so for how it reacts with sensitive skin.)
Up & Up Sport Sunscreen with SPF 30 ($5.99): We picked up this sunscreen from Target last summer and it’s what my husband prefers. It’s easy to reapply, it’s not greasy, and it lasts a long time.
L’Oreal Sublime Sun Continuous Spray Mist, SPF 50, 4.2 fl oz ($10.99): As a back-up I intend to carry this product with me at all times. It is unscented, non-greasy, and allows you to be in the water for 80 minutes before it needs to be reapplied.
In addition to this bevy of products, I intend on staying in the shade as much as possible, as well as wearing a hat and sunglasses at all times. The older I get the less interested I am in getting an amazing tan. I’m all about trying to preserve my skin and prevent it from aging for as long as I possibly can.
