Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t cook. Once in a blue moon I enjoy spending the day putting together a big meal, but other than that I’m generally content eating peanut butter sandwiches. Or, preferably, going out to eat. Thank goodness that my husband really enjoys cooking or the peanut butter sandwich scenario would likely become reality! The past couple of years he has been flexing his culinary muscles and thanks in large part to Ruhlman’s Twenty: 20 Techniques, 100 Recipes, a Cook’s Manifesto, he has really been going above and beyond in making us delicious food.
That’s why I’m going to get him a subscription to Hamptons Lane as we head into the new year as one of his Christmas gifts. I was sent a box to review and was so impressed that I knew I had to subscribe for my husband. Hamptons Lane is a foodie lovers dream box, and considering that you can subscribe and have the first box arrive after Christmas without it being weird, Hamptons Lane is a fantastic last minute gift idea.
Here’s a look at the Hamptons Lane Tarts & Pies Box I was sent to review:
First of all, the guide that was sent out with the Hamptons Lane Tarts & Pies Box is amazing! It includes multiple recipes, thorough descriptions of everything included int he box, and beautiful photography. Honestly, most other subscription boxes could learn a thing or two from this guide! Imagine if monthly beauty boxes, instead of just telling you what a product is, also included pictorial instructions for how to use said item? This guide is absolutely one of the best that I have seen!
Rectangular Tart Pan from Fat Daddio’s ($14) – Sure, this is a Tarts & Pies Box, but I was still surprised and impressed to actually receive a tart pan! A lot of boxes that I’ve seen seem to think that you have all of the utensils and just need the ingredients, which isn’t always the case. It’s great that Hamptons Lane recognizes this and also includes a pan that can be used to make many of the items included in the guide!
Cloister Honey Whipped Cinnamon Honey ($8) – I’ll admit that I was a little concerned when I first opened up the box because while whipped cinnamon honey sounds delicious, I wasn’t really sure what I would do with an entire jar of it. I needn’t have worried though because the guide includes a recipe for “Salty Whipped Cinnamon Honey Pie” that I now plan on making for Christmas.
Ceramic Pie Weights ($8) – Oh, speaking of thinking of everything, Hamptons Lane also included pie weights in the box! I LOVE pie so much that we served it at our wedding instead of cake, but I’ve never made it because crust terrifies me and then one time I thought about making crust I realized I didn’t have pie weights. (And, let’s be honest, I was looking for ANY excuse to buy pre-made crust.) Well, not having weights is no longer an excuse.
Double-Sided Pastry Cutter ($7) – Not only does the Hamptons Lane Guide contain the “Perfect Pie Crust Recipe,” but they also provided this cutter so that you can easily cut out dough pieces to make beautiful lattices atop the pie. I assume the cutter does more than that as well but I have no experience with such things. 😉
Four Decorative Leaf Presses ($19) – Prefer to adorn the top of your pie with beautiful leaf patterns instead of a lattice? No problem! They also included leaf presses in the box!
Sweet Orange Sugar by Terre Botanicals ($13) – They provided the honey needed to make a honey pie, and also the orange sugar needed to make their recipe for a Citrus Blueberry Tart (using the tart pan, of course)! Isn’t this sugar packaging beautiful? I haven’t opened it up yet but apparently it’s also delicious when added to hot tea.
Spices from RawSpiceBar ($4 each) – Finally, whether your pie is sweet or savory, you will likely need spices and Hamptons Lane paired up with another subscription box, RawSpiceBar, to provide the spices needed to make both pumpkin pie and chicken pot pie. (They also included a Chicken & Squash Pot Pie recipe in the guide.)
Overall – The total suggested retail value of the Hamptons Lane Tarts & Pies Box is $77, but you can buy it from Hamptons Lane for $47 and it ships for free. That seems like a pretty spectacular value to me, but above that I don’t think you can beat how they truly seem to have thought of everything one might need to get started on a pie and tart making adventure.
A subscription to Hamptons Lane costs $47 and each month you will received a themed box that will include artisan foods, kitchen tools, and tabletop items. Shipping is always free and you have the option to cancel any month you don’t want. You can also, if you choose, purchase past boxes direct from Hamptons Lane for the same price as a subscription. I wouldn’t mind this American Breakfast Box (and by “I wouldn’t mind” I clearly mean that I wouldn’t mind buying it for my husband so that he can make us breakfast).
I am genuinely excited about Hamptons Lane and highly recommend it as a great option for the foodies in your life. Or yourself, of course. You know that I am always a proponent of treating yourself to awesome things!
