Depending on how long you’ve been reading this blog, or if you follow me on Instagram, then you likely know that I have a huge sweet tooth. Life is short, I say, eat dessert! And, since Valentine’s Day is next week, treat those you love to dessert as well!
My recommendation? Treat your sweetie – or ask that your sweetie treat you – to a Cookies by Design Cookie Gift Basket! Cookies by Design is the original cookie bouquet company and they’ve recently begun a partnership with Build-a-Bear Workshop so some of their cookie baskets also feature the iconic Build-a-Bear teddy bears!
Cookies by Design was kind enough to send me a cookie basket and it was seriously one of the nicest things to ever show up at my house. First of all, the baskets get hand-delivered and the delivery man was so nice. Second, it was a basket of cookies… for me! Third, they can customize the cookies with either text or photos, so one of my cookies had the name of this website on it!

Before I had my son, I did all of the reading that moms-to-be tend to do and obsessed over the products we just HAD to have and read lists upon lists of the best baby brands. Ultimately, over the past couple of years, I have found that there are a couple of brands I have returned to time and again, and will continue to do so as our second child is born next month.
The Best Brands New Moms Need to Know
When we first had our son we were unsure about what to do for sleep. We didn’t yet have a crib for him. My friend had lent me a Moses Basket that I thought we’d use for a few weeks, but that first night home we discovered that my son, at just four days old, preferred to sleep on his side, and keeping him in a cloth-covered basket seemed dangerous. Out of options, we co-slept that first night and then I promptly sent my husband out to purchase a Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play. More than any other baby product, I recommend that all parents-to-be at least consider the Rock ‘n Play because I think it made my son into a champion sleeper from the very beginning. Between the slight incline, the rocking, and the general coziness, he was sleeping through the night by the time he was three-months-old, which meant that mom and dad were also sleeping through the night by the time he was three-months-old. Also awesome? We travel fairly regularly and the Rock ‘n Play is so lightweight and portable that we were able to take it with us wherever we went.
Our first Rock ‘n Play had the ability to rock for up to eight hours at a time and also played lullabies, but technology has already progressed and the Fisher Price Premium Auto Rock ‘n Play Sleeper with SmartConnect lets you control the device from your smartphone or tablet! You can turn on calming vibrations, set the rocking speed, play music, or even turn on a projector… without ever disturbing the baby!
I rave about this product constantly and highly recommend adding one to your baby registry!
For awhile I was using only Liz Earle skincare products, including Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser ($39.90 at Birchbox). While I really liked the product line, I was a bit thrown when I realized that the moisturizer I was using didn’t contain SPF as I hadn’t encountered a moisturizer without SPF before.
According to the Liz Earle website the lack of SPF is so “it can be used during the day and at night (as skin doesn’t need SPF at night).” This seems a little strange to me, but to each their own, I guess. (Also, I don’t apply moisturizer at night so this has never been a concern of mine.)
I had previously only used moisturizers containing SPF – and really, I only used Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer with SPF 30. With spring on the way, I spent some time looking for SPF products to wear atop my moisturizer because leaving the house without SPF just isn’t accessible. It’s important to wear SPF every day because it helps protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays, which can cause cancer, premature aging, and sunburn.
In case others are in a similar predicament, here are a few products to try in case your moisturizer doesn’t contain SPF.
Try these products if your moisturizer doesn’t contain SPF
Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+
Even before I switched to using a moisturizer without SPF I was using Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+. This product goes on very light, providing an extra layer of protection to your skin. While it is on the pricey side at $38 for a 1.7 fl. oz. bottle, a little goes a long way! I have had the same bottle for nearly two years and it shows no signs of running out.
To use, just apply a light layer of Super Fluid UV Defense on top of your moisturizer. In addition to protecting against UV rays, this product allegedly helps fight up to 90% of skin aging, including fine lines, wrinkling, and uneven skin texture and tone. I have very sensitive skin but I have never had any issues with this product. It is dermatologist-tested for sensitive skin and it is oil-free, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic.
Overall, I would say this is a great everyday fix and I recommend it even if your moisturizer contains SPF.
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and I’ve shared gifts for couples, gifts for her and gifts for him, but today I thought I’d do something a little different and share a round-up of 20 love and romance books for married couples.
Honestly, my husband and I don’t have the same taste in reading material – not even close – but I feel like I could get us a book that focused on “us” that we could read before bed occasionally and it would go over OK. I mean, typically we fall asleep to our Netflix show of the week, so reading something together might be a nice change and it would also give us a chance to think about ourselves for a moment, which will be especially important as baby #2 will be here before we know it! I am especially interested in Our Q&A A Day – I love this line of question and answer books and filling one out with my husband over the years would be fun!
If you’re looking for more of an “us” book this Valentine’s Day, be sure to check out the ones in this list!
