We Are Onyx

I’m a little late with this, but a couple of months ago I was contacted by the powers that be at We are Onyx, which is an online beauty store and subscription box dedicated specifically to black women. Of course I agreed, but when the review box arrived I actually received two boxes! I wasn’t sure which month the boxes were from so I decided to show you the contents of two different boxes in this one review, which will perhaps give you a better idea of what you could expect to receive with a subscription than if I jet shared the contents of one box.

We are Onyx costs $25 per month and includes 5 deluxe samples or full-size of beauty, hair, skincare and lifestyle products. After your first box you will get the opportunity to choose one of the samples you receive each month, while the other four products will be surprises.

I’ll let you be the judge, but based on the two boxes I received I am very impressed.

Onyx Box 1:

Onyx Box 1

This box included a full-size Cargo Texaslash Mascara ($20), full-size Design Essentials Natural Honey & Shea Edge Tamer ($11.99), deluxe samples of Natural Splendor Curl Conditioning Cream, deluxe sample of Hask Monoi Oil, and a foil packet of Creme of Nature Argan Oil.

With two full-size products that have a retail value of $31.99, as well as two other deluxe samples and a foil packet (I don’t consider foil packets to be deluxe), I would say this box was a pretty good deal.

Onyx Box 2:

Onyx Box 2

This box included a full-size container of Biao Beauty Rejuvenating Cleanser ($18), a full-size Revlon Bold Lacquer Mascara (approximately $5), full-size Cargo Essential Lip Gloss ($16), a deluxe sample of Luxuriant Cracked Heel Stick Soap, and a deluxe sample of Lemongrass Hydrating Body Cleanser.

The full-size products in this box had a retail value of approximately $39, and the two deluxe samples were quite generous. Personally I preferred the second box a bit more, but that’s taking into account that I’m not exactly the target market for We Are Onyx so I won’t get any use out of most of the hair products included in the first box. That being said, I was impressed with the diversity in products of both boxes and that they included brands both small and large. If I was to get these boxes back-to-back in subsequent months I would likely be very happy.

For $25, We are Onyx seems like a great way to try a variety of products. I loved that other than Revlon and Cargo, I wasn’t familiar with the other brands that were included. After receiving so many subscription boxes over the years it is nice to see new brands and products represented.
