My parents instilled in me a deep love for school supply shopping. But, not just any shopping: Bargain shopping! For me, the thrill of back-to-school shopping is tied to my ability to get good deals on the items I need. From my experiences shopping at Meijer over the past 30+ years, I can tell you that you won’t find better deals anywhere else, especially when you combine their already low prices with their mPerks reward program.

Save big on back-to-school at Meijer

I grew up in Southwest Detroit, just about five miles from Meijer. While the town I grew up in – Ferndale – is super cool now and actually a destination that people want to visit, when I was there it was pretty lame. The downtown had a dollar store and a used bookstore where I used to spend all of my time enjoying the scent of old books.  When anyone in Ferndale wanted to do some real shopping, be it for food, clothes or anything in between, we went to Meijer. If you haven’t been to Meijer before, they carry everything you could ever need. It’s one-stop shopping at an awesome Michigan-owned company.

I lived in Chicago for 13 years and while I loved city living, the one thing I always missed was Meijer. Now that I’m out in the suburbs, though, I live less than a mile from a Meijer and we are there all the time. It’s my happy place.

While it’s fantastic that Meijer carries everything, there are three things that really sets this store apart from the competition, in my opinion:

  • Meijer was one of the first stores to eliminate their plus-sized clothing section, and they instead integrate all sizes together, offering sizes S-3X on the same display.
  • Their sales – and they have frequent sales – can’t be beaten!
  • Their mPerks Rewards program, which is free to join, grants you access to special coupons and discounts, and you’ll even get a $5 coupon every time you spend $250! We buy groceries and gas at Meijer, so we frequently receive those $5 coupons, but you can also earn rewards by filling prescriptions or using the Meijer credit card.

As I’m sure you all know, we’re in the heart of back-to-school shopping season. All of the school supplies are marked down everywhere, but I kid you not: Not only is everything cheaper at Meijer, but thanks to mPerks you’ll save even more!

Mperks back-to-school coupons

Either via the shopmeijer app or the mPerks website, you have the ability to “clip” coupons that will be deducted from your order should you buy those items. Do you see the last mPerks coupon above? That’s an extra $3 off any $15+ purchase of school supplies! Remember – mPerks is free and anyone can join, so there’s no reason you should not be taking advantage of this awesome deal!

Crayons on sale at Meijer

Right now, packs of 24 Crayola Crayons are on sale for just $0.50 at Meijer! That’s half the price that I saw them at a competing store and again, there’s that extra mPerks coupon that means you’ll pay less!

notebooks at Meijer

Meijer has mountains of $0.25 cent notebooks in both college and wide-rule. I think my own love of writing developed when I was a kid and we would go to Meijer to stock up on notebooks for the year. There is nothing like opening up a brand new notebook!

I spent a couple of hours at Meijer the other night making sure that I didn’t miss any of the sales on school supplies. In addition to the notebooks and Crayola Crayons, some of the other discounts include:

  • $5 off backpacks
  • $0.15 2-pocket folders–Meijer brand
  • $1 Crayola 12-count colored pencils
  • $1 Crayola 10-count classic markers
  • $.50 Elmer’s washable glue

I picked up some supplies for my kids, of course, but every year at this time I like to put together a backpack of school supplies for a child in need.

School Supplies for Those in Need

I’m fortunate to have everything I need, so when the prices are this good I try to make sure others have what they need, too. My son loved helping me put together our Paw Patrol-themed back-to-school bag! Thanks to all of the sales and mPerks, the recipient of this bag will be set for quite a while, but everything you see here cost less than $30 total!

In addition to mPerks coupons, there are also “Rewards” that you can earn for purchasing certain items.

mPerks Rewards

For instance, a reward that was available when I went to Meijer was $4 off your next purchase when you buy $25 worth of select brands, including Sharpie. Considering that moms need back-to-school supplies, too, this was an easy reward to fulfill. I think I have enough Sharpie and PaperMate products to get me through the year.

What I have to stress here is that ALL of these items were on sale! The mPerks coupons and rewards were the icing on the cake that made everything that much more budget-friendly!

My middle-of-the-night shopping trip to Meijer was a little crazy. I bought so much stuff, between what I needed for my kids, myself, and the child-in-need, but I didn’t spend all that much money thanks to mPerks coupons and rewards.

mPerks savings

In fact, we went back to Meijer this past weekend to do some grocery shopping and were excited to take $9 off our order ($5 because we had spent $250 before that visit and $4 because of my Sharpie purchase).

Head to Meijer for the best back-to-school deals

I missed Meijer in the years we didn’t have one nearby, but I’m more than making up for lost time. How could I not miss the store, though, when their prices on everything from clothes to food to show supplies are so incredible? Add in the mPerks savings and it’s nearly impossible to find a store that can beat them price-wise.  For the best deals, shop at Meijer. For the best deals without the crowds, follow my lead and shop at Meijer in the middle of the night.
