I am generally fairly frugal and rarely spend extravagant amounts of money on anything for myself. I usually balk when an item costs more than $50, though once a year I do make a point of treating myself to something nice. Usually, my treat comes in the form of a pair of shoes or a handbag, both of which I consider an investment that I will keep forever.
Now, please don't think that I go crazy. I still utilize these tips for buying designer shoes for less (and apply them to handbags, if necessary) so that I can enjoy a splurge item for less.
I absolutely LOVE the Madewell Zip Transport Tote, think it's the best leather tote, and highly recommend it. What I think makes this bag a step above many others on the market is that it has an adjustable crossbody strap. So many totes are just shoulder bags, but I much prefer a bag I can throw across me and that won't slide down my arm. This bag is also the perfect size. It's large enough to carry my laptop and all of the personal items I carry, as well as the items I carry for my son on those days I don't want to carry a diaper bag. (For example, a changing pad, diapers, a bottle, and a change of clothes.) The Zip Transport Tote carries a lot without feeling too big or bulky. Plus, as the name suggests, it zips across the top so all of your belongings will stay securely inside the bag.

Before purchasing the Zip Transport Tote, I bought the original Madewell Transport Tote. It, too, is an amazingly made leather tote and the only thing I didn't love about it was the lack of crossbody strap.
So, here's my little secret: I've purchased almost all of the Madewell totes. In fact, I can't tell you the last time I purchased a purse or leather tote made by any other brand. I've become a complete Madewell brand loyalist.
They're made so incredibly well and they age beautifully.

This Madewell Core Flap Crossbody Bag is amazing. The black and white juxtaposed against the brown leather is the best.
